Why EV charging is a grid capacity question before it’s a cost question
Adding EV charging to a site — for a fleet, for staff, for visitors — draws additional load on top of whatever the site already consumes. Where a connection already has little spare headroom, that additional load can trigger the same conversation as any other expansion: apply for more capacity, and wait for the Distribution Network Operator’s queue, which is rarely quick. Businesses that assume EV charging is purely a procurement decision — buy the chargers, install them — often discover the capacity question only once an application is already in progress.
How on-site generation and storage change the equation
Generation and storage don’t add capacity to the grid connection itself, but they can reduce how much of a site’s demand needs to be met by that connection at any one time.
